WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL MOULD?

Mould is a form of fungus that breaks down dead organic material.

It is usually produced in damp and humid conditions. It’s common to notice mould growing in our homes as they offer moisture, warm air, and materials to feed on, such as wallpaper, wood and carpet. Unfortunately, mould will continue to develop until it’s cleaned and removed and can harm our health, so you must take care when getting rid of it.

WHY DOES MOULD OCCUR?

MOULD OCCURS DUE TO A COMBINATION OF MOISTURE AND WARM, POORLY VENTILATED AREAS.

Moulds produce spores, which spread by floating around in the air.

When they land on a damp spot, they begin to grow.

Low quality or degraded infrastructure, building materials and insulation can exacerbate environmental mould.

Moulds can grow on a variety of different surfaces, including fabric, paper, wood, glass, and plastic. As they grow, they may digest the material they are growing on.

WHAT ARE THE DANGERS TO HEALTH?

LIVING IN A HOME WHERE MOULD IS PRESENT CAN AFFECT YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH.

Mould can trigger various health issues such as respiratory infections, worsening asthma, depression, allergic reactions, wheezing, sneezing and coughing.

It may affect certain groups of people more than others, such as;

  • Elderly people
  • Infants and Children
  • People with existing skin problems, such as eczema
  • People with a weakened immune system, such as those undergoing chemotherapy
  • People with respiratory difficulties

THE ENVIRONMENTAL REALITY

MODERN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCE OF HOW WE LIVE.

Drying clothes indoors and hanging them over radiators creates a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. This moisture needs to escape and without a window open or ventilation system, the moisture penetrates the hard and soft surfaces in the room.

Cellulose plasterboard has a high water-holding capacity. This attribute makes it useful to improve resistance, prevent cracking, and enhance gypsum plaster’s overall appearance. It also boosts surface uniformity, lubrication, and adhesion when applied to gypsum plaster in putty and other construction works.

However, holding moisture this efficiently creates the issue of environmental mould.

WHY NOT BLEACH?

Off the shelf and professional mould and mildew products use sodium hypochlorite as the main ingredient. This is bleach.

  1. Bleach should not be used in environments where acids are also being used (think toilet cleaners)
  2. Bleach has potentially dangerous exposure levels
  3. Bleach can damage surfaces causing embrittlement of plastics
  4. Bleach presents a high risk to skin and eyes

WHY TECcare?

  1. Completely safe on all surfaces and harmless to humans and aquatic life
  2. Biodegradable
  3. Plant based
  4. Zero exposure on the SDS

EXPECTATIONS

IT’S ALL ABOUT LEVELS OF PROTECTION.

If mould is present, damage has already been done. There will be scars on the surfaces, even after you’ve killed it.

Can we reduce mould with no harsh in use chemicals?

Yes.

Can we stop it from coming back?

Yes, if processes are followed.

Change is required in practices.

Rising energy costs encourage people to not let their expensive warm air out, but the lack of fresh air flow can accelerate the formation of mould.

PROCESS

We have a Standard Operating Process developed by the Chief Scientist at TECcare for managing all types of mould.

This process has been developed for use in government departments.

Please contact us for access to this process.

As mould grows, it expands. The body of the mould remains hence the need to wipe away the residue and in some cases undertake remedial work eg. repainting.

TECcare® Control can go into paint and grout which helps keep mould away after the repair and touch up work has taken place.
