The sustainability benchmark for cleaning chemicals?

Published on:

Source is on a continual quest for accurate and genuine information on sustainability in the commercial cleaning space.

It's fair to say that every manufacturer and distributor knows the importance of portraying their business and products as sustainable. But it can't all be genuine, can it?

In the last few years, we have researched the market throughly, meeting with manufacturers from most of our product categories. Only now, are we truly understanding what is genuinely sustainable and approved.

Things To Be Aware Of

When looking for a sustainable brand, company or product range, check for their accreditation(s).

If they have any, check if it is for the company as a whole or for the specific product(s).

Also, check if their credential is specific to the cleaning industry. Many accreditations are very broad churches and minimal relevance to the cleaning industry.

Another level of research is to dive into the credential and research how it is achieved. Some just require minimal levels of data reporting and an annual fee. Others are extremely in-depth, expensive and time consuming.

Check the name of the brand and ensure their product is certified. Some brands use green buzzwords in their name to help draw in customers. Research beyond just the brand name of the product.

Our Thoughts

Here at Source, we are well versed in the paper consumable manufacturers who are doing genuinely positive things in the industry. We're au fait with credentials and are very comfortable with what we recommend to our customers.

However, the cleaning chemical market is more complex due to a wider set of ingredients and manufacturing processes, hence our recent research. We've recently learned more about ECOCERT and, at this moment in time, feel that it's the benchmark for commercial cleaning products here in the UK.

Yes, the certification is French. However, since we left the EU, the UK has not been forthcoming in creating our own certification. There was talk of it after Brexit but it seems to have been parked for the time being despite Brexit being the catalyst to create a UK standard.

What is ECOCERT?

ECOCERT is a global certification organisation that sets high standards for organic and natural products.

Founded in France in 1991, ECOCERT has become one of the most recognized labels for sustainability, especially in the fields of cosmetics, food, and cleaning products. Products bearing the ECOCERT certification must meet rigorous criteria for environmental and health impacts, ensuring they are safe, sustainable, and effective.

The Benefits of Using ECOCERT-Certified Cleaning Chemicals

In our quest for cleanliness and hygiene, it's easy to overlook the environmental and health impacts of the products we use daily. However, with growing awareness of sustainability and well-being, the commercial cleaning industry is tuning into to eco-friendly alternatives more and more.

This blog will explore the benefits of using ECOCERT-certified cleaning chemicals and why making the switch is a wise choice for your cleaner's health, your customer sites, the planet and your brand.

 1. Healthier Living Environment

Conventional cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals that can cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, and other health problems. ECOCERT-certified products are formulated with natural and non-toxic ingredients, reducing the risk of exposure to harmful substances. This makes them particularly beneficial for individuals with allergies or sensitivities.

2. Environmental Sustainability

ECOCERT certification ensures that the cleaning products are biodegradable and have minimal impact on water and soil quality. The ingredients are sourced sustainably, and the manufacturing processes aim to reduce carbon footprints. By choosing ECOCERT-certified products, you're contributing to the preservation of ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices.

3. Effective Cleaning Power

There's an outdated, common misconception that eco-friendly products are less effective than their chemical-laden counterparts. ECOCERT-certified cleaning chemicals undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet high standards of performance. You can trust these products to deliver excellent cleaning results without compromising on safety or sustainability.

An example of this is Viakal. A devil when it comes to ingredients and safety but it gets results. We have genuine alternatives that are safety use, harmless to the environment and do the job just as well.

4. Transparency and Trust

Products with the ECOCERT label provide a level of transparency that is often missing in the market. The certification process involves thorough audits and strict compliance with environmental and health standards. This means you can trust that the product you're using has been vetted for its claims of being natural, organic, and eco-friendly.

5. Supporting Ethical Practices

ECOCERT certification also considers the social aspects of product manufacturing. This includes fair labour practices and ethical sourcing of ingredients. By choosing ECOCERT-certified cleaning products, you're supporting companies that prioritise social responsibility and ethical business practices.

6. Reducing Pollution and Waste

The production of conventional cleaning chemicals often involves processes that release pollutants into the air and water. ECOCERT-certified products are made using environmentally friendly methods that minimise pollution. Additionally, these products typically come in recyclable or PCR packaging, helping to reduce waste and the environmental burden of plastic.

7. Consumer Empowerment

Using ECOCERT-certified products empowers consumers to make informed choices. It encourages a shift towards a more conscious and responsible lifestyle, where everyday actions contribute to larger environmental and social goals. This empowerment can lead to broader changes in consumer behavior, driving the market towards more sustainable options.

How to Identify ECOCERT-Certified Products

Look for the ECOCERT logo on the packaging of cleaning products and on our website.. This certification mark guarantees that the product meets the stringent criteria set by ECOCERT. Additionally, you can visit the ECOCERT website for a list of certified products and brands.

Conclusion

Switching to ECOCERT-certified cleaning chemicals is a small but significant step for commercial cleaning and FM businesses.  As end user customers become more aware of the impact of their choice of contractor, ECOCERT certification provides a trustworthy guide to making better decisions for ourselves and the planet.

With the Green Claims Code (more on GCC here) coming into more prominence, a bona fide accreditation for your cleaning chemical of choice is paramount.

Now the obvious question is ‘which products do we stock are certified by ECOCERT?’
